Who Really Owns Risk?

Savings

In the latest episode of Scaling the Wall, Cole Knuth and Will Brooks walk straight into one of the most urgent questions in cyber risk distribution:

What happens when insurance carriers start building their own MSSPs?

It’s not theoretical. It’s happening.
And for MSPs, it changes the game.

This isn’t a story about product innovation.

It’s about control.

In a recent LinkedIn video, Will breaks the subject down further.

The Carrier Play

Cyber insurance is still operating in a fractured ecosystem. No unified standard. No shared definition of “secure.” Each carrier invents their own criteria—and MSPs are often left scrambling to match it.

That ambiguity created the opening.

Carriers are stepping forward with a bold move: build in-house security services.
If they can’t see the full security posture, they’ll own it instead.

It’s logical.
It’s efficient.
And it’s a direct challenge to the autonomy of the MSP.

The Cost of Convenience

A client who adopts a carrier-backed security bundle may see short-term gains: streamlined underwriting, cleaner policy placement, even discounted premiums.

But when that same carrier raises rates or shifts appetite? The client has no leverage. The security stack is locked. The posture is no longer portable. Risk control becomes a product dependency—not a business strategy.

That’s not resilience. That’s entrenchment.

Why Independent MSPs Still Win

Here’s the nuance.

Only an independent MSP can offer continuity that outlives the policy.

Because when posture is managed outside the carrier’s ecosystem, the client stays flexible. They can change coverage without rebuilding their entire defense model. They retain options. They retain control.

That’s the real value prop MSPs should be leading with:

“We don’t just help you get covered. We help you stay independent.”
